Within the last few years, coconut oil has quickly become the Jack of all trades in the beauty and health world. It seems like everyone from your grandma to your neighbor has been singing it’s praises. The funny thing is, even though it’s just recently made a resurgence in the western world, certain cultures (like India) have used it for thousands of years and are well versed in it’s uses. So maybe we’re not breaking new ground by using it as a hair mask or facial cleanser, but it’s definitely become a staple in more and more pantries and beauty cabinets in recent years. It happens to be one of my favorite hair masks and body moisturizers, so I was more than intrigued when I heard first heard about Cocovít.

Of course, my first thought was, ‘Ok, so how is this different than the coconut oil at the grocery store?‘. That question was quickly answered after I had the chance to chat with Rikita Kapadia, Founder of Cocovít. The first notable difference is how they extract the oil from the coconuts. Most coconut oils are expeller pressed or cold pressed and both of these methods use at least a little heat (yup, even the cold pressed ones), and the problem with heat is that it destroys all those precious enzymes and nutrients that make coconut oil so special. Lauric acid, for instance, is full of anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial properties and this stays completely intact with their process, since the coconut oil stays truly 100% raw.

Not only is their process different, but their business as a whole is too. Rikita shared with me that Cocovít started as an idea but didn’t really get rolling until she traveled to India for some wedding related things while she was engaged. While there, she made a trip south to a small village in the region of Chennai. This is an impoverished area, but it happened to have a large farm that grew some coconuts and had a lot of potential to do more. Long story short, she now co-owns the farm with the farmer and has been able to expand the farm and employ many of the villagers. In addition, many of the workers children are now able to attend school for the first time. The farm and the workers adhere to strict guidelines regarding how the coconuts are grown and how the oil is extracted, so that everything stays 100% natural and raw.

When I first tried it I could definitely tell a difference from the jar I have from the grocery store. Mine was organic and cold pressed also, but in comparison I noticed it was kind of marbled looking with some very opaque parts and some that are more clear. The jar of Cocovít had a much more homogenous consistency and a slightly more intense coconut scent. I used it on everything from my face to my hair and body and even on my 2 year old. It left my hair so shiny and everything else moisturized, but my real testimony is a slightly TMI story about a rash on my leg. It popped up a few weeks ago and I thought it may be eczema but 2 doctors I consulted weren’t sure whether it was that or maybe fungal/yeast (eww, I know that sounds gross) because it was kind of round. I did try an anti-fungal cream to no avail, however about a week after I started using Cocovít on it, it made some serious improvement and started to fade away. The possibilities with this are endless! Check out Cocovít’s site for a full list of coconut oil uses.
