I’ve covered many non-toxic kitchen categories but have yet to do a deep dive into Non-Toxic Cutting Boards! I did touch on it lightly in my Non-Toxic Cookware Post, but after a few recent DM’s about cutting boards, I realized I needed to add some more options!

When it comes to food prep, the cutting board is one of the most used tools in any kitchen. But it’s often overlooked when switching to natural kitchen products. Many conventional cutting boards contain plastic, phthalates, formaldehyde-based glues, and more. Choosing a non-toxic cutting board made from safe, natural materials is a great healthy swap for your kitchen. In this guide, we’ll explore the best non-toxic cutting board options, including solid wood, stainless steel, glass, and more, so you can prep your meals with peace of mind.

Top Recommended Non-Toxic Cutting Boards

  • Best Solid Wood Board: This American-made brand has good size options and this is another great pick.
  • Best Stainless Steel or Titanium Board: This board comes in either stainless steel or titanium and has rounded edges for safety
  • Best Glass Board: This board is a good size at a great price (pretty sure it’s the exact one we had while I was growing up!)
  • Best Composite Boards: With non-slip pads and a drip catcher, this is a winner. This set of 3 covers your basics

Best Materials for Non-Toxic Cutting Boards

1. Solid Wood

  • Long-lasting and durable
  • Look for non-toxic finishes (e.g., linseed oil, beeswax)
  • Ideal for general food prep, safe for knives
  • Must be hand-washed

Hardwoods like maple, walnut, and beech make excellent non-toxic cutting boards. They are dense enough to resist deep cuts where bacteria can grow, and solid wood boards are free from synthetic glues or coatings when properly finished. It’s important to make sure it’s one solid piece of wood, not glued together pieces, which can be difficult to find. To maintain a wooden cutting board, apply a food-grade oil or beeswax regularly to prevent cracking and drying.

This is a great option with several sizes and made in Wisconsin. This is another great option that uses one piece of wood. Both are initially sealed with food-grade mineral oil, which wouldn’t be my first pick, but you can reseal them with an oil like linseed oil as needed.

2. Stainless Steel or Titanium

  • 100% non-toxic and highly durable
  • Non-porous and easy to clean
  • Great for meat prep and hygiene but can dull knives faster
  • Dishwasher-safe and resistant to stains

Stainless steel cutting boards are a fantastic option for those looking for a completely non-toxic and low-maintenance choice. They are highly sanitary and ideal for raw meat preparation as they do not absorb bacteria or odors. However, they can be rough on knives, so frequent sharpening may be necessary. This brand has an option for either metal.

3. Glass

  • Non-porous and easy to sanitize
  • Resistant to stains and odors
  • Best for certain food prep tasks
  • Not ideal for knives and can be loud

Glass cutting boards are another non-toxic option because they are completely inert and do not harbor bacteria. They are easy to clean, dishwasher-safe, and stain-resistant. However, they can be very hard on knives. They’re also loud! I can still hear my dad chopping away on the large glass cutting board we had growing up. This one is just like it!

  • Durable, lightweight, and dishwasher-safe
  • Resistant to stains and warping

This is a brand-specific recommendation, as not all composite boards are non-toxic. Epicurean is responsibly made and tested for toxins. The boards are Green Guard Certified. These are great for those looking for a lightweight option that’s easy on knives and easy to wash- Just throw it in the dishwasher!

5. Bamboo

  • Sustainable
  • More affordable than hardwood but still durable
  • Considerations: Some brands use adhesives with formaldehyde

Another category with lots of options, but not many are non-toxic. Most bamboo boards contain adhesives and sealants. You want to look for a responsibly made board that is transparent about the materials used. This board seems to be a good option as it uses one solid piece for the cutting surface. While I haven’t personally tried this, it fits the bill if you have your heart set on a bamboo cutting board.

Chop It: What to Avoid in Cutting Boards

  • Plastic Cutting Boards – May contain BPA, phthalates, or microplastics that can leach into food over time.
  • Cheap Composite or Bamboo Boards – Often made with toxic glues containing formaldehyde.
  • Boards with Chemical Coatings – Some cutting boards have synthetic finishes that can wear down and contaminate food. Some also contain Microban, which you definitely don’t want near your food- If you value your microbiome 🙂

Choosing the right cutting board is a simple yet impactful step toward creating a healthier, non-toxic kitchen.
