If it’s important to you that you know what’s going on your body (and your family’s bodies too), then having the right resources at your disposal is vital. I blogged about some top resources before, and now I’m sharing even more resources to help you find the healthiest, purest options and including some apps to make shopping on the go even easier!

Who hasn’t read “No More Dirty Looks” by Siobhan O’Connor and Alexandra Spunt? Well the answer until last week was me! This is practically the green girl’s beauty bible, spelling everything out in simple, easy to understand and easy to use advice. I cannot believe I just now read this! Don’t get me wrong, I came across almost all of this information long ago, but I definitely went the long way around to get it. Reading this would have saved me countless google searches, hours on EWG.org, and too many rabbit holes to count. If you’re curious about what’s in your products, do yourself a favor and pick this book up pronto!

Where to buy: Amazon.com/$9.99 for the Kindle addition or SpiritBeautyLounge.com/ $12.00

Skin Deep

Speaking of EWG.org or SkinDeep, did you know they have an app? This is probably my number one tool in making sure my products are non-toxic. The app allows you to either search products on the database or scan barcodes for even faster results. Keep in mind they are trying hard to keep up with all of the numerous products on the shelves today, so not all have been rated, but you’ll find a lot that have been.

Another great app is GoodGuide. This app will also allow you to search brands or scan barcodes and includes a much broader range of products including everything from cleaning products to pet food. Just be aware that this app’s rating system includes not only health but environmental and social impact so the results can be skewed. However, it does provide a breakdown so you can consider only health or perhaps environment, if you wish.

When looking for a particular product (like the perfect non-toxic hairspray, for example), I often turn to a couple of tried and true blogs that seem to have tested every product out there. My favorite two are OrganicBeautyTalk.com and NoMoreDirtyLooks.com. Yes, I’m totally aware that I was way behind times on reading their book but I’ve been frequenting the No More Dirty Looks site for a while now. I love that they interview all sorts of different women on what their green beauty routine is. Such a great way to learn about new products and see what works on similar hair or skin as yours. And OrganicBeautyTalk? I really think she’s tried it all and love seeing what products work.

Hope these tools help you while on the hunt for non-toxic products, Happy shopping!

  1. Shirley,
I’ve amended my post to include a link to Google Play for the Android app’s. Thanks for letting me know! I have to pull my head out of my iPhone cloud sometimes ;-).
