Healthier Sleep With Naturepedic
Ever think about your bed and how it relates to your indoor air quality? Probably not. When I think about my bed, I usually think about sleep and how I need to be getting more of it (#parentlife) and that’s about it. But, since we spend roughly one third of our life with our faces pressed close to our mattresses, we get plenty of exposure to any chemicals off-gassing from the mattress and that can inadvertently have a bad effect on our health. Not exactly what you had in mind for a good night’s sleep! So when Made Safe shared with me that they had certified Naturepedic to be completely nontoxic and Naturepedic offered for me to swap my conventional mattress for one of their organic mattresses, I didn’t hesitate. See, long before Made Safe existed and gave them their seal of approval, I had already done my research on Naturepedic and had given them my own seal of approval for my family.
Back when I was pregnant with Carson, I started researching the safest nursery products. After reading about all the studies showing young babies and children with high amounts of flame retardant chemicals in their bodies and how those chemicals are linked to everything from respiratory disorders to disrupting hormones and worse, I went into new mom panic mode and spent way more time than I’ll admit looking at organic crib mattresses. Seriously, between naps and nighttime sleep, they clock a lot of time in their cribs, so it was worth it to me to find the best one out there. Out of all of the options I looked at, I felt that Naturepedic was the best. Their products are certified by various organizations (Greenguard certified, GOTS/GOLS certified, OCS100 Organic Content standard, Formaldehyde free verified, FSC certified, and now, Made Safe certified) to be natural with no chemical emissions and they had great reviews, so we went for it. We were so impressed with the brand that we’ve continued to use Naturepedic for both of our kids and planned on eventually replacing our mattress with a Naturepedic. Needless to say, I’m so excited the day is finally here that we have our own Naturepedic mattress to sleep on (mom and dad usually come last, right?).
Naturepedic offers a lot of options with their adult line of mattresses and you can customize some of your mattress materials and the comfort level. They have any size you would want from a twin, up to a california king and everything is made from natural materials like certified organic cotton, organic wool, and natural latex. We ended up going with a queen EOS Classic with latex (they offer latex free as well), which retails for $2,999.00. The coolest part was that we were able to customize how firm we wanted each side of the bed to be and could each have different comfort levels if we wanted. My husband and I both decided to go with ‘Cushion Firm’ which is one of the less firm levels. It’s still pretty firm in my opinion, but not hard at all- it still has some give and plushness. The great thing is that you have 90 days to try out the mattress and if you’re not happy with the firmness level, you can swap out the 3 inch comfort layer to another firmness level for free. It’s super easy. Since you put the mattress together when it arrives, you’ll see how to change out the top layer. Did I just say YOU put the mattress together?? Yup! I’ve gotten a lot of questions about that since I posted about setting up our Naturepedic on Instagram. They do offer white glove set up, but it’s super easy to do it yourself. Here’s how it works:
It arrived in 4 boxes with one marked “Open this box first”. That box had the instructions and the quilted organic encasement for the mattress.
After laying out the encasement on top of our box spring, we opened the next boxes which had the encased coil supports (one for each side) and we placed those inside the encasement.
Last, we placed the 3 inch comfort layers on both side and then zipped the whole thing up.
Ok, actually the last step was letting these monkeys try it out.
Action shots mean they approve!
Told you it was easy to set up! They also have a how-to video here. The REAL question is how do we like it? Well, let’s just say I had no idea how uncomfortable our old mattress was until we got a new one. The EOS Classic is very comfortable and has great support. We’ve been sleeping great and have peace of mind knowing that we’re not breathing in unwanted chemicals while we sleep. I was a little hesitant about sleeping on latex since I’ve read it can hold heat, but we’ve had no issues with that at all. The top layer is padded, so you’re not directly on the latex anyway. Oh and the smell.. It has ZERO smell. No weird chemical scent or new furniture smell. Also, some people asked if the latex smells and our mattress does not have any latex smell either. My husband has a lot of allergies and he’s found that he’s breathing better with our new mattress too, so really we’ve both been getting a better night’s sleep.
While I did receive the mattress from Naturepedic as a PR sample, I want to be clear that beyond the product itself, I’m not being compensated for this review (because of the value of the product and FTC rules, you may see #ad on social media posts). This is an honest review of a brand that our family has known and loved for years now and I fully support their mission to make the best organic mattress out there. To learn more about Naturepedic and the products they carry, you can visit their website here and you can find them on social media: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. While they’re known for their baby and children’s products, you can check out their extensive line of equally amazing adult organic mattresses on their site.
