Finding Natural Hair Products and The Hurdles That Come With It

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Finding natural hair products that actually work and are truly natural, is the hardest task of all when cleaning up your products. I have a natural eye cream I’ve repurchased for over 5 years, I’ve used the same brand of face primer for 4 years, but shampoo? I just switched it up again last month.

Beyond the task of finding one that works, the other disappointing thing is that this is the area that I see the most dishonesty in. From sneaking in detergents and incomplete ingredient lists (definitely illegal, but it happens), to having a too-good-to-be-true scent and when you question them on the vague “aqueous blend” that’s responsible for said scent, they give even vaguer answers, until they finally stop answering you at all (for the record, companies doing it right are usually proud of their ingredients and happy to answer questions). It’s even more frustrating when you see these shampoos become the product du jour promoted by clean retailers and bloggers. Were you looking at the same ingredient list that I was? But before all is lost, let me share that there are some good brands out there making truly natural hair products and I’ll share some of my favorites.

Finding Natural Hair Products: What I’m Using Now

Natural Hair Products

Shampoo

I’m currently switching between Innersense Pure Harmony and this shampoo from Plaine Products. Some things to love about this brand: Their ingredients are really good. No hidden yucky ingredients, as far as I can tell. How they really shine is the fact that they may have THE most eco-friendly packaging out there. They use minimal plastic and everything gets reused. You get sent a refill, swap the pump and send in your empty bottle. You can read more about how it works here.

Plaine Products shampoo cleans well and helps my hair stay bouncy and fresh for a couple of days. As I mentioned, I had just switched back to this from another shampoo that I really loved, but I took issue with one of the ingredients: 1,3-Propanediol. Even assuming this other shampoo is using a greener version of this ingredient, it’s most likely made with GMO corn as it doesn’t specify otherwise, which I don’t choose to support. So I’m going to stick with Plaine Products for now as their ingredients are clean and it works well.

Scalp Treatment

For anyone with an itchy scalp, dandruff, or any other scalp issues, I’ve got something that has worked better for me than even conventional products I’ve used in the past. Siam Seas Dandruff Defeater has anti-bacterial properties that help to clear up your scalp, along with moisturizers to condition your scalp and hair.

For years I’ve had an itchy scalp anytime the seasons change or when I traveled. I’ve been using this since spring and it has completely changed my scalp. No itching or irritation. I apply this to my roots right after I shampoo and leave it on for the remainder of my shower and just rinse it at the end. It also doubles as a light conditioner for my ends!

Conditioner

This is something I rotate on. Sometimes I just stick to the Siam Seas treatment above and run it through my ends, but it’s a very light moisturizer. I use Plaine Products conditioner when I want more moisture. It has the same refillable packaging as their shampoo!

Leave-in Conditioner

Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave In Conditioner wins out here! I love the subtle scent and how well it detangles. I use it before I blow dry so I can run a wide toothed comb through my hair to get tangles out. I also use this on my daughter after her bath.

Hair Spray

Innersense ‘I Create Finish’ is the winner here as well. Their formula dries quickly while holding hair in place.

Hair Oil

I try to oil my hair at least once a week. I comb oil through it about an hour before I shower so it can soak in and really soften my hair. I really like the Harmonic Hair Oil from Innersense. It adds shine and is great for taming hair after I’ve dried it. A little goes a long way on dry hair- be warned!

Hair Dryer

While a hairdryer is a styling tool, I’d be remiss not to mention it, as this dryer is something that’s transformed my hair. I wrote about it earlier this year, but it makes my hair noticeable smoother and tamer. It’s the best hair dryer that I’ve ever used!

Everyone’s hair is different and it can be tough to find products that work specifically with your hair, but there are enough good brands on the market now that I’m confident you can find one that works for you! What products did I miss? Is there a hair product you use that you need a nontoxic swap for? Leave it in the comments below and I’ll do my best to help you find a clean replacement!
