Your Secret Told On You
Your secret told on you. That’s what a not so very nice boy told me to my face when I was about 14 or so (referring to the brand Secret). I can barely remember all the specific things that I learned from high school but I remember that exact moment in time all the way down to what I was wearing that day. I have no idea if he was just being a smart ass in front of his friends or if he truly meant it, but I do know I was completely mortified. Turns out no one likes to be called smelly. It was one of my biggest fears as I switched to natural deodorants and tried one bad one after another. Some had me actually smelling worse with the deodorant than if I had worn nothing at all! Alas, I did find not just one, but several that kept my secret all day.
First things first, for you newbies- deodorant and antiperspirant are not the same thing even though the words get interchanged often. Deodorant keeps the funk away while antiperspirant keeps you dry (it actually plugs your pores and is way unhealthy for you). I’ve blogged about natural deodorants here, here and here.. Yes, I’ve blogged about it that much! It’s one of my top questions and keeps coming up, which is why I thought it would be nice to compile one list for my readers going over all my favorite natural deodorants and what each has to offer! So without further ado…
Favorite Solid Deodorants:
Mabrooke&Co– This is a stick deodorant! Boy, how I missed stick deodorants before I found this. As much as I love some of my cream deodorants, there are times I just need to swipe a stick under my arms and go. Not only do they have 3 awesome scents (one of which is very guy friendly), they will all keep you stink free all day long. This one does contain baking soda but its in a lower amount than a lot of natural deodorants and less likely to irritate if you’re sensitive to that. Mabrooke&Co keeps you smelling fresh but doesn’t have much wetness protection so be aware if you’re on the sweatier side.

Lavanila– I debated whether or not to include this one. It’s not the best at keeping you stink free but due to the lack of solid deodorant choices and the fact that this was the first natural deodorant that even remotely worked for me, I figured I should include it. So here’s the thing, it does actually keep me moderately dry, however I have to apply 3 times a day or so to keep from smelling funky. If you don’t mind reapplying then this might be for you. I really love the scents although they are overwhelmingly girly. I also love that you can go to Sephora and get it, which means you can touch it, smell it, see it in person.

Favorite Cream Deodorants:
PiperWai– Talk about not missing your old toxic antiperspirant! This keeps me pretty dry and smelling fresh ALL day long. It’s got an almost minty scent and is pretty gender neutral. Since it contains activated charcoal it’s a grey color but rubs in clear. The texture is almost spongey. Kind of like playdoh maybe? I will say it’s a bit harder to apply than the other cream deodorants since it doesn’t melt right into your skin but the performance makes up for it.

Meow Meow Tweet Baking Soda Free Deodorant– Another wow product! This keeps you from smelling all day and is extra gentle for those sensitive pits. My sensitive husband can’t tolerate even the least bit of baking soda in deodorants so having a baking soda free option that actually works is crucial! This gender neutral and effective deodorant fits the bill. One of the things that stands out the most about this product is how well it melts into your skin. Super easy to apply!

Schmidt’s– This deodorant does keep you smelling good and comes in a wide variety of scents, some of which are very gender neutral. I’m not normally sensitive to baking soda, but unfortunately I was with this deodorant. Especially if I used it after I shaved, so I would recommend waiting a while to apply if you have freshly shaven pits.

Any of these are great choices to start with if you’re making the switch. Everyone’s body chemistry is different so don’t be discouraged! Keep trying, there’s a natural option out there that will work for you. xo
Love it! I hope to one day convince my bf to make the natural switch 🙂 he’s convinced that as a man the natural stuff just wouldn’t cut it. How do you find it for your husband?
Hey Brittany!
I have had a harder time finding guy friendly products but over all I stick to the basics and gender neutral brands for him, like Acure Organics, Meow Meow Tweet, and even some stuff from Honest co. I’m happy to make specific recommendations for him to try if you want 😉
